The Apple Legacy: Drexel’s Innovation in Education

This year marks 40 years since Drexel’s partnership with Apple which required all students to own a personal computer. In the words of Steve Jobs, this partnership, known as Drexel’s Microcomputer Project, set Drexel apart as a “pioneer” among universities.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Project, Youngmoo Kim, vice provost, university and community partnerships, and an esteemed panel of speakers will showcase how Drexel’s pioneering spirit continues to impact the student experience and shape the future of education, today.

  • Preparing for Disaster
Learn how undergraduate nursing students undergo a state-of-the-art disaster simulation to prepare them for the unexpected -- but inevitable -- from Kate Morse, assistant dean of experiential learning and innovation and Helen Teng, lead faculty member for the simulation labs. • Detecting Deepfakes
Photoshop fails and AI generated images are seemingly everywhere these days. Hear how Matthew Stamm, associate professor, electrical and computer engineering, and his team at Drexel’s Multimedia and Information Security Lab have developed cutting edge techniques to detect fake and manipulated media. Learn how you can be better prepared to question what you see and hear online.
  • Learning through Community
Community-based learning at Drexel allows students to study the issues affecting the world alongside the people who are affected. Hear how Steve Vásquez Dolph, associate teaching professor, Spanish and associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion, College of Arts and Sciences, is helping students examine the root causes of food and land insecurity in Philadelphia up-close, engaging directly with local community agriculture organizations that are working to fight it.
